How to Start a RTW Travel Blog
One of the first questions a lot of round the world trippers ponder is whether they should start their own travel blog – I had this same dilemma. So should you? What does travel blogging entail and is it worth the trade-off?
If you’ve read over my thoughts on the pros and cons of running a travel blog, and you’re still game for it, check out these resources below to speed up the process and jump-start your introduction to the industry!
Tips for Travel Blog Writing
These two resources are the best travel-specific ones on the Web right now and I highly recommend both.
If you’re serious about travel blogging and writing then you really should try to swing the tuition for the Matador U Travel Writing Course. It’s pricey, but the connections you’ll gain in the industry will propel you forward at a much more rapid pace than I had starting out.
This is more of a DIY approach that acts as a crash course in writing for an internet audience. Write Right Online takes you through the basics of formating posts and writing for your audience. You wont find grammar lessons here, but instead a very pointed and specific guide for new bloggers and travel writers.
Search Engine Optimize Your Travel Blog
I co-wrote this DIY Search Engine Optimization guide with Andy Hayes, and in my oh-so-humble opinion, it’s good. In fact, if you only consider two products to jump-start your travel blog, it needs to be this SEO Guide and the Matador U Course. SEO is incredibly important for bringing in new readers to your travel blog and very few travel blogs are doing it right now- so if you optimize right now, at the beginning, you’ll have a head start on even some of the big guys in the industry, because trust me, very few people in the travel community are fully optimizing their sites for the search engines.
Social Media and Marketing
If you’re brand new to the realm of internet marketing and social media you need Andy’s really, really thorough guide, How to Nail Marketing in Unfamiliar Territory. Unless your blog is just for family and friends then you’ll need to learn the best ways to launch into Twitter, Facebook, StumpleUpon and other hugely popular resources and social networks used within the travel industry. This guide is complete and covers nearly every real of internet marketing.
Looking for a quick boost in Twitter for Travelers in particular? Christine’s book outlines briefly how to use Twitter within the travel industry to more effectively interact with the travel community and access resources and tips all over the world. This is less about blogging and more about using Twitter to assist your travels.
