A Little Travel Memory … Slovenian Summer Street Theatre

Visiting Slovenia the first week of July in 2009 was one of those happy travel accidents—I had no idea that the Ana Desetnica Summer Theatre Festival was going on that week, but now can’t imagine the lovely little capital city of Ljubljana without the huge festival tents and impromptu street performances that took over the green lawns and parks throughout the city-center. By the time I arrived in Slovenia I was getting a bit burnt out from all of the constant movement of more than eight months on the road, and everything just aligned so nicely—the festival, a couple great vegetarian restaurants, and an affordable private room.

Look! What's That?

Street performers in Slovenia take the spectators on a journey through the streets of the city — I am still not quite sure what we were looking for!

This was so great because I love the theatre festivals I’ve seen all over the world so much so that when I was floundering recently on my next travel destination, I really considered tailoring a new RTW trip itinerary with plans to hit up neat theatre/live outdoor festivals all over the world!

The first stop would have been the Edinburgh Fringe Festival again and then I would have needed to research some of the other places that have strong theatre cultures. One of the things I never really expected pre-travel was to encounter so much experimental and street theatre as I move around. Between the buskers and the random shows I have found a good deal of unexpected art in some of the most unlikely of places.

As good as a theatre-themed trip sounds, however, Bali’s calling so the RTW Theatre Trip is on the back burner and I count down three more weeks until I leave!

Very nice photo! I don't think I have been in street theatre festival, but when I go to places, I sometimes watch theatre performances. Not the cheapest activity in the world, so can't do it too often, but I just love dance and singing performances (especially dance). This includes La Fille Mal Garde in Paris Opera (Garnier), Wicked in Sydney Capitol Theatre, and Bangaraa dance at Sydney Opera House.

Theatre performances are definitely an expensive habit, but amazing memories
so well worth it! Wicked is one of my favorite shows btw! :-)

Not exactly a theater festival, but the Busker Festival in Ferarra Italy was the highlight of my last summer. Hot Italian days and cooler evenings in a city with street musicians every 30 feet all over town.

That sounds like such a fun festival…and those hot days were made a lot
better with gelato I bet?! ;-) It *really* doesn't take a whole lot to get
me to head back to Italy so I'll add it to my list of things I want to take
      part in :-)
