FAQ about rtw travel

Young Monks Monkey-ing AroundNew to the blog? Or are you looking for answers to your most pressing questions about traveling around the world? I’ll do my best to provide an overview of my round the world trip and other resources available on A Little Adrift that may help figure out how to travel the world yourself!

Check out these questions, answers, and pertinent links posts for a run-down of the most commonly asked questions!

Where did you go on your RTW trip?

I backpacked around the world for 11 months starting in November 2009. I backpacked through Australia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Italy, the Balkans, Czech, the UK, Ireland (and a few places in between. The full RTW Route posts highlight each leg of the journey with the best posts and my favorite experiences.

How much did it cost?!Look! What's That?

Cheaper than you’re imagining!! Funnily enough, I kept a meticulous budget to track all of my expenses for the entire year around the world. Check out my RTW Travel Budget details to get an idea of how much it costs total (under $18,ooo for 11 months!) and for a costs per country budget so that you can plan for your own travels. I even offer up a sample spreadsheet that you can use to track your own RTW budget because I’m cool like that   ;-)

How did you pay for the trip?

I saved. And I sold everything I owned. The last three months before I left I moved in with my parents so that I could sock away that extra $1200 a month (the monthly cost of my apartment in Los Angeles!). But at the end of the day, a lot of my trip was afforded through my freelance SEO clients. I took a pretty slow pace on my world travels and worked on the road to supplement my savings. I’m not a particularly patient person, so I didn’t want to save for a whole other year to prep for the trip.

Why did you start your own travel blog?

I love to travel – but beyond that, once I decided to embark on my round the world travels, I knew that I would be traveling for quite some time. The nature of my online job means that I can do it from anywhere in the world – so I plan to do just. The blog was a natural extension from my desire to really infiltrate the travel community and link with some of my online aspirations.

Honoring the GodsIf you’re traveling round the world too, and pondering the choice, I’ve got some thoughts just for you: Should you start a travel blog? – I included a lot of tips and free resources for setting up your own travel site. What’s it like to travel solo?

I love it. It’s liberating and free and empowering. And it’s also lonely. I won’t deny that there are times on the road where I intensely missed my family and friends. But every feeling and every experience is impermanent, so the feeling passed and I would continue on. If I was really in a bout of loneliness I would book myself into a party hostel and really get out there to meet new people – it helped and I would start back at level again and enjoy the freedom of my solo travel.
