A Little Team…Joining Geeks Without Bounds – @GWOBorg +)

5 September 2010 49 Comments

The last two weeks have manifested the largest shift in my “life” plans in more than two years. In June 2008 I made the decision to sell everything I own buy a one-way ticket to Australia with only vague plans of traveling around the world for a year – that plan worked out really well for me (if I do say so myself!) and I have been traveling on-and-off for the past two years.

The plan for the coming months was to live and work out of Bali. Those plans have changed.

Massively changed.

I accepted a job with a newly forming humanitarian organization out of the US, Geeks Without Bounds (GWOBorg on Twitter) and the job starts in three days!

I actually had a “holy crap” moment when they asked me to come back from Bali to work on the launch – I have the financial means to continue working from Asia so this truly came down to a matter of choice. I love traveling. I really love Asia. This new project with Geeks Without Bounds though gives me the rare opportunity to work on the ground floor level of a new project, and for a non-profit with such a clear mission where I know can offer up some fun and unique skills (I’m not a coder, but I do know a bit about the world!), and at the end of the day, I get to work with good friends too.

Those three reasons combined really formed the basis of my decision to come home – Bali is going to be here but this is a such a neat (and limited time) opportunity that I could only take a deep breath, accept, and then take a walk around Ubud, this sweet little Balinese city that I thought would be my new home. Funny how fast life can just pull a fast one on you!

+) Geeks Without Bounds – GWOBorg

So what does Geeks Without Bounds do…besides have an awesomely geeky name?

Geeks Without Bounds (GWOB.org) is an international coalition of passionate problem solvers working together to assist people whose survival is threatened by lack of access to technology or communications due to violence, neglect, or catastrophe.”

Continually cracking me up is founder Johnny Diggz’s so basic but concise reason for why Geeks Without Bounds is launching: “Because doctors need to look shit up.” The core efforts will center on providing technology and geek skills to other organizations (like Doctors Without Borders) and to actual people wherever and however is needed, all over the world. There’s a bit more about how and why on the site – but the site is still in development so I’ll keep you posted with more information as it comes!

So, how to help GWOBorg launch?!

We’re still figuring that out! There’s a coder challenge for the launch – a GWOBorg hackathon competition with stellar prizes (thanks Tropo!) for coders  who develop the best application. If you’re a travel blogger with coding skills – check it out! Otherwise later this week I will announce how I need your help with ideas for the apps and specific situations you’ve noticed on your travels. Also, there’s a photo campaign (in which I really expect you guys to excel!) and, and… more to come…  :-)

As a start though, if you’re interested in keeping up with the launch and future support efforts right now give Geeks Without Bounds a “like” on Facebook and follow on Twitter - that’s the easiest you can stay updated and get involved!

What does this mean for my travels?

Well, all of this is to say I am still in Bali, but not for long. There are still Bali stories planned for the blog in the coming weeks in addition to Geeks Without Bounds information. I head back stateside on Tuesday to help GWOB.org launch over the next three months – a formal launch is planned for 10.10.10 at 10:10 (geeky enough for you?!) and I’m heading back to the US on this newest journey to help the newly forming team organize and plan everything it’s going to take to get this non-profit officially and formally launched and helping people!

So what do you think?!

  • http://twitter.com/legalnomads Jodi Ettenberg

Congrats Shannon! You surely take the travel bloggers' prize for life-altering decisions in small amount of time. Looking forward to hearing more about GWoB (as a geek myself, obviously ;) and will help you guys celebrate Pi Day next March.

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Jodi! Glad that you're joining me in proudly proclaiming geek-dom…a

couple of people have looked at me like I was crazy when I called myself a

geek but I will proudly stand up and celebrate Pi Day too :-)

  • http://www.groundedtraveler.com Andrew

That is such an awesome idea. WOW. So need to figure out how to support this.
You know the actual significance of 10.10.10 right?

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Andrew, I will be giving more information later this week about how

to get involved so I am glad you're interested! As for the 10.10.10, the

other geeks on the team gave me a full briefing on the handful of

significances associated, so I can fully claim that geeky knowledge now :-)

  • http://twenty-somethingtravel.com Stephanie

That's so exciting Shannon! You are right- Bali isn't going anywhere but oppurtunities like this don't come around all that often!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Steph! It was a crazy sudden move but feels really right, so perhaps

I wasn't meant to explore Bali this year! :-)

  • Peter Loh

Congratulations Shannon! Really happy for you! :)

One of my favourite quotes is “The art of travel is to deviate from one's plans” and its so true!

    • ShannonOD

I like that quote – it really does just nail the core traveling – you have

to learn a dis-attachment from your plan or you'll go crazy…perhaps why I

was so willing to go with this new change! :-)

  • http://UncorneredMarket.com Audrey

Fantastic! Isn't one of the beautiful things about the lifestyle you've chosen is that you can make decisions like this quickly based on your values and priorities. Looking forward to the launch and hearing more about GWoB!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Audrey! A lot of people looked at me like I was crazy since the

decision and turn-around time was so quick, but it's truly a favorite aspect

of the way we travel, you just never know what you'll be doing a week from

      now :-)

  • http://travelsofadam.com Adam

Congratulations! I love that you were able & willing to make a move like this! Can't wait to hear how it evolves…

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Adam…I have no idea where this will head and for how long so I'm on

board for the ride too! Thanks for the support :-)

  • Nomadic Chick

Congrats Shannon! I agree with Audrey. Your values seem to align well with GWoB. Can't wait to hear more about it!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks! I think it's a good fit (I can't deny there's an inner geek in there

wanting to help people ;-) Thanks for the support!

  • http://www.baconismagic.ca Ayngelina

Congratulations, this is such an exciting move!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support Ayngelina! I'm pretty psyched – the nature of the

non-profit just sounds like it will so much fun to work on :-)

  • Earl

Excellent stuff Shannon! Your excitement for this new turn of events is clearly evident in this post. It's just a fact that sometimes we travel all the way to the other end of the planet only to discover that the opportunity we've been waiting for is somewhere else. Cheers to you for being open to such a wild ride!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Earl – I am excited so I'm glad that came through, literally have

been smiling for days. It's like the Alchemist story…sometimes you have to

go on a journey before you find out there was something close to home the

whole time. That being said, I am still hoping that Asia is on my horizon

again, I think I would miss the foreign food if I were stateside for too

      long! :-)

  • rachelcotterill

As a travel-addicted geek with a social conscience – can I just say WOW! I will check out the hackathon, definitely – and let me know if there are other ways I can help. Congratulations on this exciting new adventure :)

    • ShannonOD

Yay! Thanks for the support Rachel. Def check out the hackathon and I will

be posting more ways to get involved later this week :-)

  • http://www.theroadforks.com Akila

Congratulations! That's such exciting news. I'll get Patrick to check out the hackathon. He's actually working on a couple of different travel-related apps himself, so I'm going to tell him to look at what y'all are doing, too.

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support Akila and for passing on the info to Patrick, sounds

like something potentially right up his alley, if not tho I will have some

other ways to easily get involved later this week :-)

  • Candicewalsh

Damn Shannon, what a cool endeavour! Love how excited you are about it, despite all your plans changing. Congrats!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Candice! I appreciate the support…and I guess I must have been

pretty enthusiastic in the post because you're not the only one who

      commented on it, lol :-)

  • adventurerob

Congratulations Shannon, sounds like a cool job!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Rob! I am pretty psyched about the possibilities :)

    • ShannonOD

Thanks Rob! I am pretty psyched about the possibilities :)

  • http://www.TheConstantComplainer.com The Constant Complainer

Shannon, I know that I'm a newer reader to your blog, but I share the sentiments that everyone else has – congratulations! And I look forward to hearing more about your new project and GWoB.

    • ShannonOD

Thank you so much for the support :-) I know it deviates from the whole

travel blogging a bit so I'm glad to hear everyone else is excited too!

  • Amy @ The Q Family

Congratulation! Sounds like you have found your calling. Love the name and the reason from the founder. :) Can't wait to hear more about what you guys will be doing with this.

    • ShannonOD

Thanks so much Amy and thanks for the support, more info will be coming

      soon! :-)

Well, I'm bummed that we will not be able to meet up in Bali after all, but I'm so excited for you! Sounds like a great project and well worth a change of plans. Looking forward to reading more about it. Where are you going back in the States?

    • ShannonOD

I know :( But on the up side, I think you will be there right in time for

Writers Festival in Ubud if you're interested – they will have a whole lot

of workshops and special events going on…so that should be a lot of fun -

I was actually really bummed I'm missing it, so if you make it I'll be

interested in knowing how it went! Somewhere else perhaps we can meet! BTW,

I never sent you info on Gibbon..do you still need that?

      • http://twitter.com/awanderingsole a wandering sole

I decided to pass on Gibbon- thanks though :) Well, yes we'll just have to meet another time! I'll definitely look into the Writers Festival, and if I can go, I'll fill you in.

  • http://www.vossdufourworldtour.com Johanna Voss

Congrats! Life pops these fantastic opportunities for a reason. Excited to see where it all leads :)

    Buena suerte.
    Johanna

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support and wishes of luck Johanna! :-)

  • http://foxnomad.com Anil

Sounds fantastic, can't wait for the launch and to read up more on them…

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support Anil! I will def be posting a bit more in coming week

      :-)

  • DavenDeb

Good luck with everything Shannon. It is amazing how life can change in an instant, but it is those people that have the courage to go with the flow that make something spectacular out of an opportunity. And you did! I look forward to seeing what is coming up!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support guys! I do truly appreciate it and will be posting

more in the coming weeks :-)

  • http://www.footprintsofabackpacker.com/blog Sarah

Congratulations on your new direction in life. I think one of the most important underlying philosophies behind travel is being open to the new and exciting opportunities that life can throw at you. So, as you said, Bali will still be there in years to come but this is an amazing opportunity for right now. Best of luck!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks for the support Sarah! Being open to change is perhaps one of the

most important lessons you learn on the road, you're right. My instinct was

to cringe at the change, but then I embraced. More details in the coming

      weeks :-)

  • http://www.maiden-voyage-travel.com Emily

Congrats, Shannon! What a great opportunity. It sounds like it is going to be very hard to leave Bali, but you're right in that it will always be there, but this opportunity will not. Can't wait to learn more about it!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks so much Emily! :-) I will def be posting more in the coming weeks,

but I appreciate your support right now!

  • http://twitter.com/OverYonderlust Erica Kuschel

Oh WOW! This sounds like such an amazing non-profit! Hubby and I worked in the video game industry for 3 years and I totally support this cause! Let me know how I can be involved!

    • ShannonOD

Thanks so much Erica! We are finalizing a few more details and then I'll

post an update on how you can get involved! I appreciate the support :-)

  • OriginalGWOB

Maybe you should help the original Geeks Without Borders, instead of the clowns pretending to be them.
