Edinburgh is one of my favorite cities of all time, though I haven't been fortunate enough to be there during the Fringe Festival (yet). I love the energy of the city, so I'm sure it is just incredible during that time. I agree that it is a pricey place to visit. When I last went, my travel partner and I stayed in a serviced apartment with a kitchen, so we saved money on some meals by getting food at the local grocery store and cooking.
