A Little Relaxing…Lazy Days in Ljublijana

13 August 2009 Comments

After yesterday’s rant it still seems a little self indulgent to admit that I spent ten whole days in Slovenia’s capital city and I really didn’t do a whole lot. Helen and I were getting burnt out so we decided to head straight for the capital and spend a few days purely relaxing before the street theatre madness descended upon the city.

One of the biggest indulgences of the week? Movies!!!! And not just the bootleg DVDs that I bought in Nepal to pass the time (I know it’s wrong to buy bootleg, I know, I know, I know) but an actual movie theatre with the buttery smell of popcorn assaulting my yearning nostrils the moment I stepped into the icy-cool lobby.

Lake BledI am sad to inform my blog readers that I broke my months of movie-theatre fasting with the latest Terminator movie –Karmen and Mitja, our couchsurfing hosts, were really eager to see it so Helena and I agreed…and I think it was fairly terrible but it was still a bit surreal to be sitting there under the huge screen. It’s been nine months!

I also watched: Star Trek, I Love You Man…and, wait for it, Harry Potter!

I feel so caught up now :-)

It was a tad gluttonous to watch all of these movies, but it was actually pretty cheap compared to what I used to pay in LA, LA land. And I loved it. Movies in Slovenia are dubbed so I was all in the clear as far as understanding them goes…although I almost wish I had watched Terminator in Slovenian, it only could have helped.Bled Castle

Scheduling in the movies was, sadly, a priority for me. I was going through withdrawal after nine months without.

Besides the movies though, another reason that I loooooved Slovenia? They embrace the vegetarianism. After the dearth of edible food in Bosnia, I was a little overwhelmed by the sheer selection of vegetarian food available. Ljublijana even has a vegetarian restaurant to delight my senses! Can I just say how  nice it is to have food to eat…good, tasty and delicious food to eat in copious quantities? Very lovely. :-)

With the summer theatre and cultural activities taking place all over the city the week and a half I was there I was able to spend whole mornings catching up on the internet, afternoons at the movie theatre, and evenings watching Swan Lake and the street theatre.

I am recharged and ready to tackle Czech Republic now…which is good because I hear word that Prague is really touristy and that’s what’s next on the agenda!
